Enchanting paradise, lovely place, peaceful spot, a dream came true… all these words are usually used to describe Maldives.
Is it a paradise for real? Is it true that it is an unspoilt place where the nature reigns supreme? DID YOU KNOW THAT MALDIVES ARE PREDICTED TO DISAPPEAR IN 20 YEARS?
Well, today I’m going to tell you the story of Fathimath, a girl that I met while I was in this ”Dreamful Paradise” and you will understand something really important about this fairytale place.
The story of Fathimath

Fathimath is 11 years old and lives in the Island of Magoodhoo situated in Faafu Atoll.
Like many other children of her age, Fathimath likes to play with her friends all through the island, which is not that long, it measures almost one kilometre.
Every day Fatimath loves to go to her special place, the little Harbour . This little harbour is situated in the northern part of the island and it’s not the principal one, where all the boats come at stay, this little harbour, like her mum many years before explained her is a special one.
In this harbour come all the little boats of fishermen or locals who are carring products of any types from the furtherst islands in order to feed the entire population.
This little Harbour assumed a special meaning to Fatimath : since she was very little she used to go there with her mum admiring the sunset.
Unfortunately, her mum died when she was still 7 years old but Fatimath enchanted by the peaceful of the place and as to remeber her mum still keeps going there everyday.
One day, while admiring the sunset imerged in her thoughts, she noticed something weird. She had the impresson that the little Harbour was going down a little and she couldn’t understand why.
The following days, day by day she went there and she could realize that the little harbour was still going down and down and were begining to appear plastic bags, garbages and trash but still not understanding why.
She was desperated, more the years passed and more she was asisting to the ‘’death’’ of her special Harbour.
What she find out was that not only the harbour was sinking, but also the palm trees surrounding it . The Palms trees just along the water shore were beginning to go down.
Fathimath surranded.
She was prevented from doing anything because now, she realized that she couldn’t win the will of the nature. The nature was simply reacting to Climate changes and Humans’ actions.
The story of Fathimath makes us understand that Climate changes are affecting the world but especially the little islands of our globe, like Maldives, which are litterarly DISAPPEARING.
Unfortunatly, this is the TRUTH which surrounds these islands and the worst is that many people, also locals still don’t know how to react, how to cope with the problem because they don’t have the necessary instruction to face the issue and the big foreign companies only exploit them and their territory. In others words, everyday they are risking to loose their home!
IF YOUR HOME WAS DISAPPEARING, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
